Department Communication Studies at JIMS, Vasant Kunj organized a Faculty Development Program on 19 May,2014. Dr. Sushree Panigrahi, a Fellow at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Contemporary Studies (RGICS) conducted the session on ‘Gender Discourses and Constructing Identities‘. Ms. Sushree is a sociologist specializing in cultural studies namely related to gender, media and refugees.

Starting off with a powerful short film with the theme on role reversal, she talked about constructs of gender, sex and identities. Invoking stalwarts such as Virginia Woolf and Mary Wollstonecraft she spoke about the long fight that women persisted to secure adult franchise and other rights. She spoke about different schools of feminism starting from Liberal to Radical.

The long struggle for gender parity carried out by women from different countries was discussed in the backdrop of varied cultural contexts and historical situations that emerged out of socio-political and economic considerations. The interactive and interesting talk was able to raise questions, highlight important issues that are often overlooked and also look at major turning points. The contributions of serious scholars was put forth unassumingly.  The discussions became more intense yet more interesting by the time the session concluded. It left everyone asking for more and each one to dwell on issues such as stereotyping and interpretation of gender in our own way. The Department just couldn’t thank her enough for such an invigorating session  filled with anecdotes.

From Chairman's Desk

Dear Student

Health is wealth is an ever famous phrase, the importance of which cannot be undermined. Good health involves disease and stress free life. These are measures to cure disease, prevent health related problems, step to boost the health, reduce the stress and morbidity, hence mortality. Good health is essential for good living, growth, wellbeing and prosperity. Health is the most important facet for a better life but normally neglected by many. In today’s very busy and hectic life, people would rather prefer to run after money and other material things than looking after their own health. It may not be possible to end this but we can always diminish it by taking very simple precautions. Let us think how can we live better and what is good and bad for our health, our family’s health and of course for our society’s health as well.

Eat a healthy diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and cherish your health, keep it good.
